RSS Feeds

RSS is a way to keep up with new content that is added to websites, without having to actually visit them. Infogineering.net has two feeds - one for site updates, and one for the blog.

If you already understand RSS, then scroll down to the bottom of the page to subscribe.

What Does RSS Stand For?

Depending on who you ask, it either stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary.

An RSS "feed" is the content (e.g. text) of a website, with all the graphics and layout around the webpage taken out. You're left with the raw content, which can then be accessed by other services on the Web. Some sites provide their full articles, while others just provide their title, a summary and a link to the main article.

What's the Benefit of RSS to me?

Imagine every morning, you visit four or five sites. Maybe a few news sites and a forum. With RSS, instead of going to each of these sites, you can have the lastest headlines and forum post titles presented to you in one place. You can then choose which articles and pages you want to visit from one list.

In short, RSS allows you to keep up to date with changes and new content on hundreds of websites, without having to visit them all. It can save you a lot of time and effort.

How can I view these "Feeds"?

On websites where RSS Feeds are available, they will usually have one of the following symbols somewhere on the page.

You can either either use an RSS-reader website (some are listed below), a dedicated RSS reader program (such as Snarfer), or can usually subscribe in one of the latest web browsers.

In Internet Explorer 7, there is an RSS logo in the main menu panel - which is normally greyed out. When you visit a page with an RSS feed, this will turn orange. Click on the Down Arrow to see the list of feeds available.

In FireFox, when you go to a site with an RSS Feed available, the RSS Symbol will appear in the URL bar.

Click on this, and you will see the feed - with instructions on how to subscribe.
